Politics in Contemporary Iran

Our courses cover the question of the Iranian revolution, the basis of the Islamic Republic of Iran, and the foreign relations of this country. We also explore the relations between the state and the civil society, the causes of the regime change during the Pahlavi era, and the evolution of the Islamic theocracy during the Iran-Iraq war (1980-1988).

We also analyse the myth of the suicide bomber which has emerged during the Iran-Iraq war. The very first modern martyr of islamic ideologies was a young boy, Hossein Fahmideh, who changed the face of military tactics in the entire Middle East.

Our analysis also considers the U.S. involvement in the Middle East, how the United States and Iran demonize each other, how to better appreciate the complex interactions between the structural underpinnings determining the Iranian political economy and the American values and aspirations since the Iran hostage crisis (November 4, 1979), until our days.

Concept of islamism

We tackle the subjet of modernity and postmodernity. The concept of disenchantment is the key notion to understand the nature of ideologies. Even if social sciences describe disenchantment as a western phenomenon (a cultural rationalization and a weakening of religion), this notion can help us to understand the emergence of islamist ideologies in the world. Islamism refers to diverse forms of social et political reading of islam.

Our analysis explores the history of islamism from 1920 to the rise of the islamist terrorism of ISIS.

Western djihadism and relations between Europe and Middle East

Social sciences describe radicalisation as a process by which a person adopts increasingly radical means of interpreting the world and uses violence to reject or undermine social norms, pluralism or contemporary ideals. How the emergence of this phenomenon in Europe (and the whole free world) now defines the European policies ?

Beyond the security and defense policy in the Europe Union, what is the nature of the relations between the European Union and Syria ? What is the position of the EU in the Qatar Crisis ?
